How it all started
The Inspiration: The Inception
Nerima Health and Education Services (NHE) was inspired by the story of one remarkable woman—Yemima Joyce Nerima, born in 1936 in a typical polygamous homestead in eastern Uganda. In a world where girls were undervalued and education for them was considered irrelevant, Nerima was expected to follow the norm: drop out of school, marry early, and be exchanged for a bride price. But she defied this fate.
With the support of her brother, Mungoma Buyi, who saw her potential beyond her circumstances, Nerima pursued her education and excelled. She became a teacher, married her childhood sweetheart, and together they raised six children. But tragedy struck when her husband was brutally murdered, leaving her to raise their children alone, without electricity, running water, or a phone.
Despite the hardships, Nerima succeeded. All six of her children attained higher education and eventually moved abroad for better opportunities. Though she let them go for their future, it was another sacrifice that marked her strength and resilience.
In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic raged, Nerima faced her final challenge—terminal cancer. Separated from her children due to travel restrictions, she was cared for by the community until her passing. Her legacy lived on through the profound impact she had on her family and those who knew her.
To honor her memory and carry forward her dream, NHE was founded—a nonprofit dedicated to empowering more “Nerimas.” Through education, support, and leadership programs, NHE aims to uplift vulnerable girls and women, as well as vulnerable boys to help them overcome the obstacles Nerima once faced.
